How to Assemble a Water Jug Lantern for Camping

Using only two camp items, a headlight flashlight and a gallon jug of drinking water, you can create a useful ambient light lantern. This lantern will flood your tent with soft light rather than a single harsh beam of light, so you create a fun and relaxing atmosphere. It also allows more than one person to benefit from the flashlight.

Steps

1. 1 Pack the items you will need. This project uses a simple head flashlight that has the elastic headband and a gallon jug of drinking water.
   • You may want to pack spare batteries.
2. 2 Know how to find your flashlight and water jug before your camp gets too dark.
3. 3 Place the headlight flashlight strap around the gallon jug. The strap should be about halfway down the jug.
4. 4 Point the flashlight toward the jug. The lamp should be aimed inward, toward the jug. The water inside the jug will diffuse the light and flood the tent with ambient light.
5. 5 Turn on the headlamp flashlight.  
6. 6 Place the water jug lantern on a box, table or cooler to elevate it. The lantern will not be as effective if it is placed on the ground or floor.
7. 7 Remember to turn off the lantern to conserve batteries when not in use.
