Motorhome Classifications Explained

Classifications of Used RVs for Sale

As many from the baby boomer generation begin to retire, they're looking for ways to spend time going places and seeing sights they didn't have the opportunity to enjoy during the years they worked and raised a family. A motorhome, particularly one purchased in an RV used sale, is an excellent way for a couple to visit family or enjoy tourist destinations on their own schedule rather than on an airline's schedule and budget.

Anyone thinking of purchasing an RV first must determine what kind of motorhome will work best with his or her lifestyle. There are several different classifications RVs, ranging from a pop-up trailer to a luxurious motorhome similar in size to a bus or a commercial truck. Fitting a recreational vehicle into a budget can be mitigated by searching for a used RV for sale.

Class A motorhomes are the largest recreational vehicles on the market. This type of vehicle is built on the same type of chassis, or framework, as that of a bus or a commercial truck. A Class A motorhome usually ranges from 25 to 40+ feet long and gets between eight and 10 miles of fuel to the gallon, whether it runs on diesel or gasoline.

While the Class A motorhome's size may seem unnecessary to some, it's often the vehicle of choice because its accommodations rival those of many hotels, including separate bedroom and bathroom facilities. It has a galley kitchen, which can often include a full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher and even a trash compactor. Satellite hookups and large-screen televisions aren't unusual either. A Class A motorhome provides almost every comfort of home in a compact, portable space.

A Class B motorhome resembles a van, with enough additional space in which to stand upright. This type of RV is usually between 15 and 24 feet long and, as a result, is easier to park and maneuver than the Class A motorhome. It typically gets the best gas mileage of the three classes of motorhomes, with 20 to 25 mpg being the expected norm.

Although the van chassis on which the Class B RV is built provides enough room for a person to stand up inside it, space is limited. This RV features a sleeping area for up to four people, a kitchen and seating area, as well as an all-in-one bathroom facility to save space. Built-in television and other electronics and towing capabilities that permit owners to haul other recreational vehicles such as boats or all-terrain vehicles make a used motorhome class b an excellent choice for many small families on a budget.

Class C motorhomes are vehicles that are larger than the Class B RV but smaller than the Class A. These types of vehicles provide amenities such as separate bathroom facilities, a more complete kitchen, and electronics that are on a smaller scale than those in the Class A. Other types of recreational vehicles some potential owners might be interested in are fifth wheel trailers, which are towed by a truck, pop-up campers and travel trailers.

Finding the right RV or motorhome can take some time, but it's worth a couple's efforts to thoroughly research options. For a couple who is just starting in the RV lifestyle, a Class B vehicle is an excellent choice. Its price, gas mileage and maneuverability make this type of RV the kind of vehicle that will introduce a family to the freedom and fun of traveling by RV.

Buying a used motorhome is an excellent way for a retired couple or a family to get a taste of what it's like to live life by their own agenda. Vacationing in a RV, whether it's in a small used motorhome class b, or an extravagant class A, is a great way to experience the freedom provided by a recreational vehicle.
