Components of a Bike Crank Set

2016/7/25 11:44:08

A bike crank set has a lot of various components, and you may not have realized how complicated they were. If you'd like your cycle to run as well as possible you need to have a better bike crank set that's matched to the scenarios you'll be using the bike in.

First, in case you are confused with the terminology itself, you have to understand what a bike crank set is. Collectively it represents the pieces of your bicycle that transfer the energy of your movement into the wheels to propel you forward. Therefore, it is obviously a crucial, but still overlooked, part of your bike.

The 1st piece of a bike crank set that you must become familiar with is the crank arms. The crank arms are what attach the pedals you rest your feet on to the rest of the machinery. For mountain biking or other heavy duty scenarios, you may want to be stronger crank arms that will not crack or fracture.

The crank arms then fasten to the shaft of the bike crank set, which is the same as the axel. Another piece you should be acquainted with is the chain ring. The chain ring, sometimes called a sprocket, works alongside the chain itself to essentially transfer the power from the pedals and cranks to the wheels themselves.

The chain rings are attached to spiders and they can be removed or replaced on most bicycles with a bolt circle diameter. BCDs come in many different adaptations and so it is vital to be certain your cycle is compatible with the spare parts you are purchasing.

On your bike crank set the bottom bracket assembly is what holds everything together and keeps it in the right place. The bottom bracket assembly will be attached to the bottom bracket shell.

Another common problem people have with a bike crank set is that there truly are not any standard measurements. Trying to mix n match pieces from different sets and different manufacturers will not work very well in the slightest. Therefore it's best to get everything in one set and to try and keep the brand consistent.

Also remember that a typical bike crank set can include any number of components. Some manufacturers include all pieces including the bottom bracket assembly and separate cranks, others only include a few of the main pieces required. It's another reason why research is so important before making your final purchase.

There are lots of different elements to a bike crank set. It can be confusing even for people with an experience in cycling. To prevent yourself from purchasing the wrong parts, be sure to buy everything from one manufacturer and to buy a set that matches you planned uses.
