Otherwise known as bicycle motocross, BMX bikes have been used for quite some time in races and stunts which started in the early 1970s.

Various organizations have been created to support this growing sport over the years. It started in 1974, where the very first National Bicycle League was formed by George E. Esser, in Florida. Next in 1977, the American Bicycle Association was created and then in 1981 where the International BMX Federation was formed. It was in 1982 where the very first world championship was held. And just last year 2008, BMX as a sport was included in the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing having two categories: Male, where the gold medal was won by Maris Strombergs from Latvia and one for Female which Anne-Caroline Chausson from France claimed the very first gold medal .

BMX bikes can be used for sports, others used them for fun like normal bicycles. If one invests this interest in sports, BMX bikes can be pricey. BMX bikes may cost from a mere $150 to as excessive as more than $3000. Companies such as Schwimm, GT, Haro and YAMAHA have also been manufacturing BMX bikes.

These BMX bikes are rather smaller than other bicycles. Their sizes and wheels differ. BMX bikes are smaller but with bigger wheels that are more effective for driving in uneven roads. Others also are custom-designed to suit the riders' needs.

Riders can either race on dirt tracts or compete for the best stunt they can showcase. Others also make a living out of this sport. They travel from places to places to compete wherein they also earn recognition. BMX racing and stunt riding are just two of the most popular and adrenalin-driven sport we have today.

The more common term to this stunt showcase is called Freestyle riding where riders are allowed to show off their unique talents in riding their BMX bikes up in the air and on the ground illustrating different moves and stunts. Crowds usually are wowed by the excitement being shown by the riders.

There is a thrill in this type of sport which can give both the riders and the audience the excitement and need for speed and power however one has always to bear in mind to be careful since BMX bike riding is a dangerous sport.
