Behind the Competition of a Pro Cycling Race

When it comes to watching any type of racing it is important to not only appreciate the race itself, but to appreciate all of the factors that go into the actual race. For example a car race is more than high performance automobiles speeding around a race track trying to obtain the checkered flag. Some of those important factors include the maintenance of the vehicle, the expertise and speed of the pit crew, sponsorships, etc.

Additionally, the same could be said about the pro cycling race circuit. Specifically, those important elements leading to a successful pro cycling race include equipment and the training.

Equipment

In order for a professional bicyclist to be competitive in a pro cycling race it is important that certain significant investments be made. The first investment is the purchase of a quality racing bike.

These types of bikes are generally very expensive to purchase. The first factor that makes the bikes so expensive is that the frame is made from special materials that help to provide the needed strength for competitive racing. In addition, these specially constructed frames utilize special materials in order to make the frame more light weight and therefore more conducive to speed. Generally these types of bikes are made from carbon, aluminum, steel, or titanium.

In addition, the wheels utilized to construct the bicycle are made from light and highly durable aluminum. Also, the spoke system incorporated into the construction of the wheels is different than a typical road cycling bike. This is because less spokes are used and therefore more expensive due to the tensile strength of these limited amount of spokes that extend from the rim of the wheel to the center.

Another piece of equipment that is critical to the performance of the bicycle used in a pro cycling race is the gearshift system. This system is very sophisticated and easily helps the biker shift into various gears to help navigate the various levels of terrain that are experienced in a pro cycling race.

Training For A Pro Cycling Race

Another investment that contributes to the success of an individual who is involved in the pro cycling race is the training that the cyclist has committed to. Generally, in order to train for competition, the individual needs to commit to a minimum of 2 to 6 hours per day for months on end before the competition.

In addition, the individual, when they are not on their bicycle, will be found in the weight room increasing their strength and stamina through weight lifting.

Finally, as part of the training process, it is important that the cyclist attends to their diet. Generally a professional bicyclist will eat an abundance of carbohydrates and proteins so that they are repairing their muscles and receiving enough energy to maintain their rigorous bicycling routine and training.
