How To Build A Bike Rack

2016/7/25 16:12:52

Finding a place to park your bike at home can be a problem for some people, but learning how to build a bike rack can certainly fix the issue. A bike rack not only provides an upright parking location, but also allows you to secure your bike properly with a locking system. With all the advantages of a bike rack, bike riders like yourself will most definitely use one. Why not build one to save you money?

What you will need:

  • 30 feet of one-inch PVC piping (schedule 40)
  • Eighteen PVC connecting Ts
  • Six 90 degree connectors
  • PVC glue or cement
  1. Cut the PVC piping into the following measurements: six of each in 18 1/2 inches, 16 1/2 inches, 9 1/2 inches, 8 1/2 inches and eight in 1 3/4 inches.

  2. Assemble the piping to make a four-pane rack. Each of the horizontal pipes are 16 1/2 inches connected with a T in the center. The ends of the pipes are capped with a T and a 90 degree elbow. The vertical pipes from the T and the elbow create the thin placeholder for the bikes tire. The top section of the vertical pipes are 9 1/2 inches whereas the bottom is 18.5 inches. Remember that each vertical bar is made up of two: one a T and one from the 90 degree elbow.

  3. The panes are separated with Ts on the back side so that additional piping is used to make a support.

  4. Glue the entire frames together and let dry.

Building your own bike rack can save you a lot of time and money and allows you to customize the rack to your needs. The modifications can allow for more room for bikes, a smaller rack to fit in a smaller location and more.
