Team Gbs Cycling Success

2016/7/26 16:16:35

It is no secret that Great Britain are great at Cycling. In the past two Olympics Team GB has won 26 medals in the forms of the cycling and this accounts for over 23% of the total medal from the two games. With this we have seen so many Legends that people will never forget and this goes along with the 2012 Olympics which we will never forget.

Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy nicknamed The Flying Scotsman is one cyclist that will go down in history after breaking numerous records throughout the games he has competed in. He first competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where he won silver in the Team Sprint. He then grew as a competitor and won gold in the 1km time trial in Athens 2004. At the Olympics after this his career exploded where in Beijing he won 3 gold medals in the team Sprint, the Kerin and the Individual Sprint. This then led to him receiving a knighthood for his commitments to cycling. He then carried on his success into the London 2012 Olympics where he won 2 more gold medals in the Team Sprint and the Kerin. This broke a record as he became Britain's most successful Olympian which is an amazing achievement. He was also the Team GB flag bearer in the opening ceremony for the games.

This is not the only success story or British cycling with people like Bradley Wiggins who has won 2 bronze medals, 1 silver medal and 4 gold medals across 4 Olympics. This makes him joint top for Britain's most decorated cyclist with the one and only Chris Hoy. Bradley Wiggins has also had a massive achievement of his own this year other than the Olympics as he became the first British person to win the Tour De France ever. This is an astonishing achievement and shows how far British cycling has come.

The fact that the two most decorated Olympians for Team GB are both cyclists shows that it is a sport that we excel at. But what is this down to why are we so good at cycling? If you look around the country it will have a lot to do with the facilities available to the public. With these facilities the future is till bright with Olympians like Laura Trott breaking onto the scene in London and then winning 2 gold medals in the Omnium and the team Pursuit aged only 20. She obviously has a bright future in which she can go on to win many more medals in Brazil 2016 and even beyond that. She could be a contender to even surpass the likes of Chris Hoy as the most successful Olympian for Team GB.

Jason Kenny is another example of the prospects of British cycling. Although he is 24 he made his first appearance in London and like Laura Trott he also won 2 gold medals; one in the Sprint and one in the Team Sprint. If you're thinking that at 24 he hasn't got many Olympics left think about Chris Hoy who is 36 and still going strong. This means that Jason Kenny could still be competing in the 2024 Olympics which is when he is also 36.

Part of the success could be down to British Cycling which has masterminded the development of such great cyclists. They have been doing a lot for cyclists around the country by making sure there are coaches up and down the country that can develop youngsters. In addition to this they organise races regularly which helps them realize the ones that are going to make a difference in future Olympics. It is because of this that you should try and get your child into cycling. With all the coaching available to you the sky is the limit for your child.
