Permit Fishing Tips

2016/7/21 16:30:53

If you ask practically any experienced fishing guide for their best permit fishing tips, you will usually hear things that will work in relatively any kind of salt water fishing. Tips such as be aware of you fly line at all times as well as watch the fish are sound advice but to take it one step further, what guides essentially want you to do when permit fishing is act as if you are bonefish or tarpon fishing 鈥?only on a different level.

Over the last 12 years I have spent as a guide in Florida's Key West, I have witnessed fly fishermen making a great deal of unnecessary mistakes while permit fishing more than any other kind of fishing. However, it is likely that there are just many more elements that can become mistakes when it comes to fishing for these frustrating fish.

Because of this, I have added a few more suggestions that are important for any angler whenever they are fishing for permit. Hunting this species typically requires years and years of individual trial and error as many effective techniques are extremely difficult to become skilled at. While learning the right way to set your hook for permit can take years, learning the hard way not to be standing on your line once a permit runs is a lesson you will likely never forget.

It is usually a good idea to find out how deep the water you are going to be fishing is before you step right out in your waders into it. While this may seem obvious, for some reason to many anglers, it has not been. Knowing about the area you will be fishing in may seem like an annoyance, but it is key to your success.

Part of fishing for difficult fish such as permit has to do with ingraining seemingly simple and obvious habits into your routine as these can usually mean the difference between a successful trip and having to swallow a rather bitter pill.

Always match your fly rod appropriately before permit fishing. Once that is out of the way, you need to be sure you are always holding it. With permit, it is important to expect be caught off guard. Many fishermen have simple stepped away for a split second in order to take a sip of beer and the next thing they know, they see the gleam of a fish in the sun.
