I'm gonna make a change in my blogs during the spring and the summer, I will still post Lake/Pond descriptions, but I will also post updates on the lakes/ponds too. This blog will be the first of many that provides an update on a Long Island lake/river system.

Forge Pond Update

Forge Pond is one of the most common places to go fishing for bass, pickerel, crappie, sunfish and catfish here on the Island. If you have gone any time in the past few weekends, you know that's true. Forge was filled with boats, kayaks, and canoes. People out to enjoy the day and people out to catch the big one.

Since this is just an update, I'll give you key lures and areas to fish.

The best lures/baits for this time of year are worms. Texas Rigged have the best results. Twitch them or slow reel them in. Work it however you want, figure out a pattern that works. Let the fish tell you what works, not some blog. Let the blog narrow it down and give you an idea on what to use, but overall let the fish tell you how to work it. They work best in shallow, slow moving or non-moving water (coves, pockets, etc).

Rod: Medium-Fast Action. Something with a good backbone that will withstand lilies and all the types of weed growth you'll encounter.

Line:15-20lb braid is fine. That's what I use and I've never had a problem and I catch L.I. monsters!

Other lures that work great in the spring are Spinnerbaits. You can fish spinnerbaits anywhere in Forge Pond, anytime of the year.

If you're planning on going out fishing on Forge or another body of water on Long Island, plan it on a sunny warm day, where there hasn't been rain for at least 3 days before. The water is still warming up and the rains are cold and will change the patterns of the fish dramatically. Trust me.
