Boats first trip PART 2

2016/7/18 12:24:05

Well our first trip in the boat went good. There are a few things that need to be tweaked on the motor but all in all it went well. The motor that I have on the boat came from my father-in-law(Jay, Bear Pond Guide service Bridgton, ME) and though its old had very few hours on it. I replaced the condensers points and magneto and it runs still needs a little tuning but it should be a perfect fit for the size and weight of the boat. the trolling motor setup is a little awkward to run but did its job and will hopefully get swapped out for a foot control at some point. As for the stability I was shocked at how well it did, I knew that it would be fine but it was better than that, I was able to stand on the front deck and fish all day without once feeling as though I was going to fall over board even with the skiers and personal watercraft that were on the lake making 2 foot waves. (I still haven't mounted the front seat post) Again the boat is small but fishes well and the front deck is big enough to keep my rods organized and mostly out of the way. the front decks is nearly 8 1/2 feet long which helps make the boat seem much bigger to fish from. the rear deck is small but was more than adequate for my son to fish from and I'm sure an adult could fish there comfortably. The storage compartment is huge and once I've built the racks in it it will be awesome.

As for the fishing it was fantastic as always, I'm not saying it was a slammer day, my son and I worked for our bass but at the days end we ended up with a dozen or more with a few real nice ones.I worked a REDEYE shad for most of the morning mixing in a tube and wacky rigged worm after we got a few on a spot. while my son threw everything in the box at them ( we really need to work on his knots) but ended up using a tube for the majority of the day. The bass were  suspending over deeper water near flats with steep rocky drops in the morning and as the day progressed and got hotter moved to areas that had fallen timber on steep rocky banks. We tried docks for a few hours but found that the few bass we picked up on docks had to have fallen trees near by and the fish were holding between those key spots.

the last bass of the day my son caught as I loaded the boat on the trailer and though it wasn't a big bass my son will remember that bass for a long time, it was his first bass on a baitcast. The boats first trip was more than just a test run and fishing trip, it was a day spent with my boy.

Remember to pass on the tradition and love of fishing to the next generation not only is it good for the sport it makes memories that last a life time.
