Twas days before Christmas in 2010, when we left for a fishing foray with nary a care. It was me at the helm chair and Lonnie on a cooler with the wind in his hair. Benny was my shotgun rider as we flew over the river and through the sound to a scene seldom seen off our coast. The water was so calm it looked like a ghost. So at 4000 rpms we made of it the most. Little did we know that on this 21st day of December we could boast. Rods in the holders and fiddlers in the bait locker we were soon to give each other a toast. Dropping to the bottom I pondered this post. Benny was on the bow, and I, on the stern, was flanked by Lonnie as many seabass we did boat. Switching to dead shrimp was essential to maintain our plan. For into the pan we did want to see the convict fish back on the land. Egg sinkers were used as were stout leaders of 18 inches or more. I whipped my rod over the side and down to the bottom, and suddenly did appear a striped wonder of the toothy critters to go into the fish box without a whimper. Good natured banter did prevail without a loss of a temper, so I fished on; the many a fish did I boat. Then with great fanfare did Lonnie announce, "a net if you please." It was black drum of such stature that no longer him could we tease. He had broken the ice and was no longer on his knees. Meantime on the bow, Benny did rig and rerig till Lonnie did dub him "rerig Benny" until he learned how. Both anglers marveled at the old captain whom with the fish created such a rough. The fish box it did steadily fill with scaly critters, to the point that we feared it might bust. For after the striped rascals we did lust. The use of fiddlers, now that was a must. On Jimmy, on Lonnie, on Benny, away we did fish. For the end product we knew would be so read to fry. "Bring me the net" was an often hew and cry. Finally, the fish box it was full and it was time to fly over the waves to the dock. Away we did go for visions of fried fish did dance in our heads. It was time to unload the boat and count the fish to each his own portion. For this day was as fine as it gets, unless you are eating fish with your grits. So, to all that read this little ditty of a day on the water, may the same blessing befall you all and may you revel in the season and have such a ball! Merry Christmas, 2010 Capt. Jimmy for Benny and Lonnie.
