Fishing is a pleasant form of recreation for some and serious business for others. That's clearly the case for Robby Rose, a 45-year-old Texas man who is going to jail for cheating during a bass fishing tournament.

Rose pleaded guilty on Wednesday to theft of more than $20,000 but less than $100,000 after cheating at the 2009 Bud Light Trail Boss Big Bass Tournament on Lake Ray Hubbard.


How Did Robby Rose Cheat?

Rose was caught sticking a lead weight into a bass fish he caught during the Bud Light Trail Boss Big Bass Tournament on October 24, 2009.

Tournament officials noticed Rose's fish settled near the bottom of the tank. Upon closer inspection, they found a lump in the fish's belly. When asked to cut the fish open, Rose reportedly rubbed the fish's belly and removed the weight from the fish's gullet.

Rose pleaded guilty to the charge, and received 15 days in jail and five years probation. He also had to give up his fishing license while on probation, no doubt a painful blow to someone who is clearly passionate about fishing, perhaps a little too passionate.
Rose got himself into hot water because the tournament he was competing in offered a $55,000 boat as a grand prize. Rose's cheating was seen as attempt to steal the boat.
