Taylormade R9 Driver FCT & MWT Instructions

Taylormade has now given its players the ability to use their FCT and MWT technologies together in one driver, the R9. This gives players a huge amount of customization options for their driver, and even though its an it truly is a breakthrough for golf drivers, it can get quite confusing. So if you are a little confused, the information below will help you turn your new R9 driver into a golf club that perfectly fits your swing. So finally you'll start hitting your drives with a perfect trajectory all without changing your golf swing.

There are 4 main FCT (Flight Control Technology) options, N, NU, R, L, and 4 more settings in between each of those, for a total of 8 FCT settings. The FCT settings affect the face angle, loft, and lie which in turn changes the trajectory of the of your drivers. You will find a chart below for each loft that shows how each FCT setting affects the trajectory and specs of the driver.

The MWT feature, which was first introduced in the R7 Quad, is Taylormade's Moveable Weight Technology. The R7 Quad had 4 moveable weights, whereas the R9's only have 3 weights since you can also use FCT technology to manipulate the trajectory of the ball. The R9 drivers come standard with two 1 gram and one 16 gram weights. Below you will find more information showing what effect the positions of these weights have on your trajectory.

The following charts are read left to right showing the following specs in the order below.

Note: The lofts in the below chart are when the club head is square. The negative numbers for trajectory bias mean a bias to the left or a draw bias, whereas a positive number reflects a bias to the right or a fade.

MWT Instructions for Each Weight Configuration

Taylormade's MWT technology basically uses simple physics by adding more weight to specific areas of the club head to affect the center of gravity. The MWT feature is to be used on top of the FCT technology to increase trajectory bias even more than what you see above in the FCT chart instructions.

The simple logic behind moving the trajectory bias from left to right and vice versa is as follows. If you add more weight to the heel of the head the toe will be lighter and thus it will close faster through impact providing more of a draw bias or right to left trajectory. If you increase weight on the toe of the club, the toe will close slower through impact resulting in a left to right shot or a fade.

Now if you have more weights available than just the 16g and 1g weights and you want to mess around with the height of your drives you can do this by changing how the weight is positioned from the front of the club near the face, to the back of the club. If you add more weight to the back-center of the club this moves the CG back, which in turn raises your trajectory and will also increase your spin rate. To lower the trajectory just add weight to the front of the club near the face, this will also lower your spin rate.
