Which Long Range Rifle Scope To Choose?

This is a big question: which optics should you choose for your long range weapons? The first thing that you do on picking up a rifle scope is to look through the reticle and put it on target. While we are discussing about the long range shooting, it is important to note that these involve shooting targets at unknown distances and even while on the move. This kind of shooting is found in both military and sports. Whatever the field of application, the most important requirement for this type of shooting is the rifle scope. Precision and accuracy are two of the most important factors in this regard. I have used Benchrest scopes and found them quite useful for long range hunting.

However, there are a lot of factors to consider before you purchase the right long range shooting rifle scope. These scopes should offer the following:

  • an uncluttered view of the target

  • the holdover should reach out to the maximum enhancement distance

  • allow optical ranging in the absence of laser rangefinders

  • should be 100% repeatable

  • should be able to shoot in low light conditions

These are some of the requisites for your long range rifle scopes. In addition to these, the choice of reticles is equally important. The reticles should have been marked at regular intervals. These are generally referred to as the Mil-dot or hash marks.

So what options do you have in the commercial market today? Well, there is a wide array of rifle scopes available for the users. However, it is imperative that you set a budget before buying these. Here's a list of probable buys for long range shooters and hunters, based on the prices.

The first scope on this list is the Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40mm Mildot. I would not rank it as the best glass but it is a good performer. but the price at which it is offered is great. Secondly, it is the Leupold Mark AR 6-18x40mm Mildot. My personal experience says that you can hit your targets at 1350 yards with this scope mounted on your rifles. The zero in this scope is quite repeatable and the glass is a standard one. It's good. If you consider this money wise then it is a great buy.

Nightforce Benchrest scope is just perfect for long range hunters. Throughout the entire zoom range the image quality is outstanding. The Benchrest is one of the earliest scopes manufactured from this brand. The objective lenses provide impressive clarity and low light performance. However, a lot of folks tell me that these are on the heavier side. The choice of hunting gear is all about personal choice. If you are ready to handle big rifles and heavy scopes, then the Nightforce Benchrest rifle scopes are the best deal. Expensive, yes but these are worth every penny.

If you are ready to shell a little more then there is Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 EBR-3 MRAD. This is a precision device that is perfect for long range shooters.
