Learn About All the Different Types of BMX Bikes

BMX bikes are synonymous with racing. Their structure and design is customized to give them flexibility and enhance their performance as they dissect the different terrains. For the ultimate experience while racing on a given terrain, you need to pick the right bike that has the features for that particular racing track. When road racing for instance, you need light framed bikes so as to boost your speed and performance.

BMX bicycles come in different models. Each model has different features that make it suitable for racing in the particular conditions it is styled for. Below is a brief analysis of each model and the features it has that makes it a real racing machine.

BMX Flatland

These are bicycles that are suited for riding on smooth and flat surfaces. They use four pegs which are positioned on each end of the bicycle wheel axle. Their wheelbase is slightly shorter compared to the other models making it easy to position the bicycle on one wheel or to make it spin. In addition these bikes give the riders increased stability when racing on flatland. Any attempt however to race on dirt, ramps and street will effectively decrease the stability of the bike. Depending on the preference of the riders, these bikes can have front and rear brakes, front brakes or no breaks at all.

BMX Racing Bikes

These BMX bikes first graced the racing scene in the sixties. They were designed to race over jumps and to negotiate bends. They also perform excellently on dirt road. They are generally light in weight and have optimized speeds. Their wheels are usually 20–inches with the exception of cruisers that have wheels measuring 24-inches. Their saddles are relatively small and have upright handle bars. What is exciting about these bikes is that they are light in weight and are made of aluminum or chromoly making them easy to race with over long distances without feeling the weight.

Freestyle BMX Bikes

As the name suggests, these bikes are made for any terrain there is. They are suitable for riding on flatland, street riding and on skate parks. They can also be great for riding to the store or to school. Some bike options have heavy duty wheels that are designed with 48 wire spokes while others have "mag" wheels that are constructed with sturdy nylon. The tires have treads that are fairly smooth because this bike is predominantly a pavement pounder. If you are a rider who loves stunts, there are axle pegs that are incorporated. The breaking system has both front and rear brakes.

Dirt Jumpers

These bikes bridge the gap between the racing bikes and the freestylers. Front brakes are conspicuously missing from this model. The wheels appear bigger and stronger and incorporate 36 rugged 13-gauge spokes. To make them appeal to large riders, they come fitted with 24-inch wheels. Among all BMX models, Dirt Jumpers have the most heavily treaded tires.

The BMX Street Bike

If you are a lover of street racing, this is the bike for you. It comes with a sturdy steel frame and fork that guarantees durability. Its stopping power is enhanced by its front and rear brakes which work in tandem with its coaster brake. The chain guard helps to keep the riders clothes clean and free from mud and dirt. Some street bikes come with a handle bar pad for protecting the hands. The saddle is comfortable enough for a long sitting as you cycle round the street paths.

This analysis is an eye opener for many riders as it shows them the BMX bikes that suits their taste and terrain. With BMX bikes, cycling is a lifestyle.
