AAU Ball-at what age?

First of all I want to let you know that I am NOT the fanatical Dad that pushes his son.  In fact, I have told him that practice is the only way to get better and it is up to him to come to me to get additional reps...and he does A LOT!

Now my question is this:  What age is appropriate to start boys playing on AAU teams?  

My son is 7 and probably in the top 10% in ability in our league (which is a private league known for better players and coaching).  He has said that he would love to play on one of these teams, but I want to make sure before taking such a serious step at this age.

I have mixed feelings on this topic.  I think that AAU type baseball tends to drive alot of kids out of baseball.  If your son really wants to play more...that's fine...I have less of a problem with it if the child is the driving force in the choice.  However, I do feel that most AAU teams are coached by people who are far more interested in winning than player development.  If he does play AAU, keep an eye on how he continues to feel about the game.  Frankly, the best players I've recruited we're very diverse in their early athletic endeavors.  Make sure he gets an opportunity to be well rounded as an athlete.  It will benefit him more down the road.
