pitching practice

Question
Hi i was wondering, does practice pitching with a rubber ball help your pitching command or does it just throw you off. I know, it won't have the same rotation as a real baseball. I usually draw myself a strike zone an pitch the rubber ball. Do you have any advice? Thanks

Answer
Hi Chris,

I don't think it hurts you in any way to practice throwing a ball regardless of whether it is a regular baseball or a rubber ball.  However, I definitely think you get more benefits out of throwing a regular baseball for most of your throws.  This gives you a chance to train your hand on griping a baseball and will also let you learn how to use its seams to full advantage.  The baseball seams are what make a baseball so interesting.  They can add velocity to the baseball and add movement depending on how your grip it.  Another alternative to your current practicing may be to buy a bucket of baseballs and a basic net.  This will cost you a little money initially, but you will recoup the cost after a season of practicing.

Hope this helps,
Jack Elliott
