Hello Anthony, Concerning the Max Y Grip or the off-set thumb, I have come to the conclusion it is something I would not advise unless you were dealing with someone who knew what the hell they were doing. Generally this is the inventor or a direct student of the teacher.
As a pro shop staffer I have seen some pretty interesting stuff in my short time of ball drilling. ( I truly could share some interesting stories.)
What you do learn from the Max Y Grip is how to connect your middle finger to your thumb for release. I briefly talk about this in my new bowling book, "TRUE BOWLER ADJUSTMENTS."
Since the span is stretched, a feel is created that you may not otherwise notice.  However, if you had an experienced certified instructor they would be working with a bowler more on how to deliver a good release verses extending the span in any dimension. When you are searching for the perfect "fit" it is often the "release" and "ball reaction" the bowler is trying to master.
So the questions asked by everyone..., "why would a bowler try to get a "different grip other than the one that is customized for him or her?" --- Is there pain? Will this give them better balance of the ball in their hand? Are they looking to get the ball off their hand sooner, instead of lofting it? Will this change increase their revolutions? Will this new grip stop them from tracking over the finger and thumb holes? Will this new "fit" allow them to read their bowling ball reaction better? Overall, is there a possibility they may score better?
Today, people are often trying to save money. In bowling the best thing you can do to save money is to get an experienced coach to work with you on your release. I often say, "find someone who does what you want to do, and see if they can get you to their level."
I averaged 220 for several years overseas. I had the right bowling ball for my lane conditions and a spare ball I loved. After a wrist injury 5 years ago, (throwing a 16 pound ball) I have never been able to come back to that level of play.
I worry about reinjuring my wrist before "every" delivery to this day.  One thing has changed personally for me. " I let the ball do the work." If it does not, then I adjust, However, nothing beats having the "right" bowling ball for the "lane conditions." Even if it is just a house shot.
Your ball fit is extremely important. It needs to be comfortable. However, after your ball fit, learning how to properly deliver the ball is the next goal. Once a bowler has been "trained or taught" at least two ways of delivering the ball, they can truly work on finding the right ball for their particular conditions.
Trying something different is okay, especially if you are bored, or you just need to say you have been there, done that.
What I know as a bowling ball driller is you can seriously hurt someone if you put them outside of something "comfortable" to them. The body, (wrist/hand) will only take so much.
I am not a fan of over stretching anyone. If bowlers are spanned correctly, its usually just the matter of turning an insert, or getting a smaller or larger sized insert. Also, because of the webbing or meatiness of their hand they may need a little beveling to take away the sharp or raised edges of the thumb hole here and there.
I have beveled more bowling balls than any coach should be asked to do. But its better than seeing the skin peel, blister and eventually tear away into a bloody mess.
I see bowlers in the shop every week changing spans and adjusting pitches. I know in my heart they feel they have to try something to get a better "feel" or whatever. I really don't blame them. However, that is what the Max Y Grip does for all bowlers, it just gives you a different feel.
Thanks for your question Anthony. Strike, but strike a lot, my friend!
