Carry

Question
Susie,
For us "straighter" down and in players, what tips do you have for getting as much carry and pin impact as the crankers out there do?
I know slowing down the ball speed can increase the hook and angle. Any other tips?

Answer
Hi, Michael!

Carry is dependent on several things, some of which you cannot control, like the alignment of the rack, for example, or the carry characteristics of the center. Let's assume, though, that all the things you cannot control are perfect!

You are right that slowing the ball down will cause the ball to hook sooner. The reason that works is the heart of your question. Carry is about three things: angle, speed, and rotation. If all of them are right for the lane surface and oil condition you are on, it will be a good night. If any one of them is not, you're in for a long night.

Folks with a high rev rate create a lot of pin spin when that high rev ball hits the pins. That keeps the pins low and increases carry. If you enter the pocket at exactly the same angle and speed as they do and can keep the pins low, your carry will increase. Sounds simple, I know, and you know it is not always easy to do. It is the answer, however. You have to have the right angle, the right speed, and the right rotation for that particular lane on that particular day. Over the long term, straighter is greater.
