2 Questions about the Line

Question
One of my questions is when I am at nose tackle how do I get passed the center and still see and tackle the guy with the ball when they say hike.
The second question is when I am at the offensive of tackle spot what do I do when the defensive tackle is lining up on my out side shoulder and the play is running on my outside shoulder and it is the weak side.

Answer
Dear Mitchell,
When you are playing nose tackle chances are you may never see what is going on in the backfield.  The important thing is to disrupt the play by keeping your ground and giving the center trouble. Concentrate on which way you are being blocked and that will give you a feel of where the ball is going, just make sure to stay square.
When trying to block that guy on your outside shoulder, that is called a reach block.  What you need to do is take a step with your outside foot, to the outside, this will open you up more, from there you go forward to get your fit on the d-linemen that you are blocking. You have to have quick feet for this block and the most important step is the first one, it's almost like a slide step.  Be sure to get your helmet on his outside as well and you'll be fine.

Good luck,
Chris
