Lacing them up again

I am 51. I played rec. hockey for five seasons then 'retired' two years ago.
I was thinking about getting out for some 'stick and puck' by myself this summer and maybe playing again next Fall.
I went out last week and my Nike V4's hurt like hell.
In the past after a layoff they hurt just a bit till I got used to them.
Question: Is it time for new skates? Just how long does an average pair last? These were stored in the garage in the cold if that makes ant difference.
If you think I need new ones, what about a pair of used Grafs? I cant afford new but would pay $100 or so for a used pair. I cant find any where I live so I put ads in 'Kijiji' in other Cities like Calgary and Edmonton. I thought I would have them shipped on the bus C.O.D.
If you dont think this is a great idea what pair should I get? I tried those 'recreational' skates on-they felt great but its like wearing boots-no agility.
One more question? I though I would try to get in a little better shape before I hit the ice again. Other than running, what exercises do you suggest?

If your skates have the special gel that allows for heat moulding you may just need to get them re-moulded. This just heats them up, and then you put your feet inside and the skates mould to fit your feet.

I think that buying a used pair is a coin toss because each brand fits a bit differently, so you may end up with skates that fit even worse, or not at all! If you are going for comfor the best way to do it is find a pair that fits nicely from the start. It is best to try them on to see how they feel. If you can't get your old pair to fit right then maybe it is time for new skates!
