Spinnerbait blades

Question
I am making some 3/8 and 1/2 oz short arm spinnerbaits, using colorado blades. I will use them for slow rolling and helicoptering. How big of a blade can I use and still have the bait work right?

Answer
Hi Jim,

One of my favorite spinnerbaits was the old Bass Buster Tarantula.  As far as I can remember, that was the first short-arm spinnerbaits on the market.

For slow rolling and helicoptering, you can get away with a little larger blade.  For the 3/8th ounce a #5 Colorado is the best.  For the 1/2 ounce I always use a #6 Colorado.

If you are pouring your own heads, the Do-It Style C spinner Jig mold (SJ-2-C & SJ-C2-M) is very close to the old Tarantula.

Also, for this type of spinnerbait I'd highly recommend a quality size #2 ball bearing swivel.

Good luck!
