New Reel Dilema

Question
Mr. Dicken,

First let me say that I am 35 years old and getting back into fishing for the first time in over 15 years.
Some things I know are like riding a bike and I always thought fishing was one of them but so much has seemed to change.
I live in Georgia and this weekend I got the "itch" I went out and with very little guidance, quickly outfitted and licensed myself.  I purchased a Quantum Snapshot reel and a Shakespeare rod.  Nothing too fancy but not junk either.  I put 6lb test on the reel and fished for about 12 hours Saturday with barely a bite.  I realize conditions, technique and many other factors go into that and also PATIENCE.  My concern, that I'm really unsure about is the reel.  I was only able to cast as far as about 15 yards.  I used a friend's setup and things were fine.  What might be my problem(s)?  I realize this is probably very generic from what you're used to being asked but I'm just baffled about what may be my issues.

Thanks,

David

Answer
If I am remembering correctly the Snapshot has a pin. The pin may be the problem. It holds the line till you let go and if you dont let go right the line does not get enough pull to get it going. If not the pin, then it could be you just have not gotten the particular reels mechanics down yet.. Let me know if this helps.. I need to go look up the Smapshot, and make sure it has a pin. Most spinning reels you hold the line with your finger, but I am thinking the Snapshot has that pin and you only hold the reel trigger..
Let me know if I am wrong.. Not sure what else to tell you.
I do know a fellow down your way named Ken Sturdivant who owns several fishing sites and does some teaching and guiding. Might want to contact him.
