pedigree or confirmation

Question
hello ma'am, in racing industry, to pick a thoroughbred yearling at auction sales, would you give more preference to its pedigree or to its confirmation?

Answer
Thank you for your question.  When picking a horse at auction it is important to me to narrow down my choices so I start with the catalog page first..that is where I look for the best pedigree. Once I have selected the best horses based on conformation, I then go to the stall and scrutinize conformation.  It has been my experience that a horse with higher class breeding will outlast one that I picked based on conformation first. Ideally you can find the best bred horse with conformation suited to stay sound.

The Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association has an excellent free ebook on buying yearlings. They also have other ebooks that you might find useful.  This is an organization I highly recommend that everyone in the equine business to support!
