Knee Clicks

Question
Hi Dr. John,
Last year, after conference in Track, I'm a jumper. My knee started making a very loud popping/clicking sound when I brought my leg all the way back to my rear and then straightened it, but it didn't hurt. A few months later I hurt it when I lunged down and my leg went one way and my foot was pointing the other way, the next few days I could barely walk without it hurting, I saw an orthopedic doctor and he said it wasn't anything too serious and it got better within a month. I just recently started track again, jumping and it hasn't given me trouble until today when we were practicing and my knee started clicking, it was very cold outside too though. Now I'm starting to hear it click when I walk, is this a severe problem or normal? I researched it and a lot of the articles said its just air escaping from the joint or something or its some tendon or part of the knee repositioning. But should I be worried even though the clicking doesn't hurt?

Answer
Hi Megan
You should be worried and the orthopedic doctor is totally incompetent for that kind of advice.he should be reported.Your situation is a tracking and a alignment situation, but not serious based on your description.I would recommend 30 to 40 minutes upright stationary bike workouts 3 times a week at medium tension high rpm 65 to 90 rpm increasing the tension as you get stronger. If you have other questions just get in touch or call me here in albuquerque NM at 505 271 5909 any time from 6am to 8 pm MT.Take this serious Kim.

All the very best

John
