Am I stupid?

Question
I ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 1981 when I was 42 years of age with a time of 3 hours 25 minutes.  I love to run but in l982 had a knee injury and subsequent operation.  Was told to ride a bike for exercise which I did.  In the last four months after being sick and gaining weight I tried walking on the treadmill along with recumbent biking.  I now run(jog) 10 minute miles for 3 miles without any problems.  I am super competitive but wonder if this is too much for my age (70).  I watch my pulse and do not go over 160 max.  When I started I did not go over l50.  What's your opinion.  I am 5'7" and weigh 156. I know you can't guarantee I won't have a heart attack.

Answer
Hi Karl
Your age is not a problem and won't be down the road at any age. There are tons of runners 70 and above who are going at it and running marathons and triathlons etc.I personally know quite a number of them.It is all about training and building up properly just like you did for the marine corp marathon.I would not worry about a thing Karl. You just want to decide on a good goal that gets you excited and committed and then put a program together and get to work.I do phone coaching if interested. If you have anyhting else on your mind just call or write Karl.

All the best

John
