Running / Ab Work-outs

Question
If, in addition to daily 2.5 hr practices, a rower was to (ONLY) run... or (ONLY) do ab-work exercises... which would be more beneficial, and why? Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi Polly: Without a doubt, the running is more beneficial. Long runs and shorter distances with sprinting would improve your aerobic capacity, which is important in the heat of a boat race.  While ab-work has some benefit for flexibility and strength, it is not the sole thing you want to do to supplement your rowing.

I would have to say this is not the right approach to training to compete in rowing.  You need to augment your time on the water with running, ergometer workouts, and weight training (which can include your ab work).
