Question
Hi, I just started as a novice at Georgia Tech men's crew, and I'm really into it.  I weigh about 140 and am about 5'10". We did a 4k erg test for boat placement, and I pulled a 16:02, is that good? What would typically be good for lightweight at the college level? Thanks

Answer
Hi Andrew: For the Concept II Erg, I have posted a link to the results for the Lightweight Men's Division of an event known as the CRASH-B S[prints, considered to be the world indoor rowing championships.  The best men in the world typically row 2000 @ 5:50 or better (that's superhuman).  For a first time rower @ 140 pounds, your time is promising.  However, though you did twice the CRASH-B distance, I'm guestimating that you would probably do about a 7:30 over 2000 meters, that would put you down there, but certainly not at the very bottom.

For your 4K piece, you were doing 2:00 splits for your 500s.  Generally, if you can sustain an average 500M time of 1:40 and 1:45 on the meter scale for 2K pieces, you will be an asset to the Ramblin' Wreck Lightweight Crew. Good Luck.

Regards/AP
