Varmint rounds

Question
Hi Mike,
I was wondering what your favorite varmint round is.  I'm looking for a max mushrooming round for shooting squirrels but also shooting grapefruit, oranges, and other fruits and vegs for fun.  Explosive power. Looking in the 22-250 size.  Thanks.

 Matt

Answer
Hi Matt,
Speed Kills.
I have a 220 swift and use Nosler ballistic silver tips with their Moly-like coating. I Now use these Ballistic Silvertips in all my Rifles that accept these bullets. Not in 444 or 45/70, but 243,3006,300 mag, etc.
Tey are devastating, accurate and really easy to clean the barrel. I get NO copper.
My swift shoots 40 grainers at about 4150-4200 fps. And All of my 5 shot groups are less than 7/16" with many at .306 to .369 depending on the load and ambient temp. I have not actually shot anything, but paper with the 40's, but at that speed they have to be absolutely devastating.
Yor can try Hornady V-max bullets. I've had good results. Sometimes I think they may be a bit more explosive, but I've had Nosler 22 55 grainers Zip through the soft part of woodchucks with little expansion, I thought. But I've hit wood chucks with 6mm  80 grain Remington factory hollow points square in the chest bones and literally turned them inside out. I think you need to try different bullets if you want, but I'd rather hit something at 600 yards when I want to. I'm sold on the Noslers for all they do. You won't be disappointed.

Good luck,
Mike
