Inline vs. running

Question
I like to do cardio at the gym (running on the treadmill). It keeps me healthy and in shape; but, lately I have been getting            terrible shin splints and I am looking for a different method of cardio. Does skating give the same workout as running?

Answer
Skating could give you the same cardio work out but you would have to be able to skate with aggression and consistent speed to accomplish it.

If you're not a skater, then you would have to condition your muscles to tolerate it otherwise you would end up with more shin splints and perhaps other muscle problems.

But to answer your question?  Yes, you could achieve the same value of workout.

I would suggest you talk to a sports doctor to see what's causing your shin splints to begin with.  Perhaps he can easily give you a clue as to why it's happening and how to prevent it whether your running or skating.  Shin splints are small stress fractures so get some info before venturing off to another sport.  It's better to be safe than sorry.

Good Luck
Pat
