Want to get back into windsurfing

2016/7/22 14:39:30

Question
In my 20's my buddies and I did a lot of windsurfing. The five of us actually brought the sport to Long Beach Island, NJ in the early 80's. Anyway, had to move inland for many years; gave it up. Now being 51, I've since move back to the shore and want to rediscover this great sport. I'm about 210 lbs but in fairly decent shape. What board and rig would you recommend for a guy and size that had some decent skill and should not take too long relearning how to windsurf again? Thanks for your response in advance. I had a long board back then, never did any short board or wave jumping.

Answer
I learned to windsurf not far from there.  I also started sailing in the early 80's on the Great South Bay on the south shore of Long Island.  You will be very happy with the newer equipment.  If you are not into planning and just want to tool around I would go with a board in the 180 to 200 liter range with a 7 to 8 meter sail.  If you decide you want to go fast,  go with a board in the 150 to 160 liter range with the 7 or 8 meter sail.  Of course with the smaller board you will need more wind but you will definitely go faster.
