harness choices

2016/7/22 14:42:24

Question
I am looking to purchase a windsurfing harness.  The basic choice as I see it is between a seat type harness or a waist harness.  I am aware that there are also some "convertible" harnesses that can be adapted as a seat or waist type.  There are also some that have various hook heights.  I have a seat harness that is about 5 years old right now.  I would like to upgrade to newer gear.  I consider myself an intermediate sailor.  I primarily sail on lakes in Indiana but I do spend a week on the ocean at Hilton Head Island every year - mostly heavy chop and hefty shore break on windy days. I'm on my way to Calema Windsurfing for a Perfomance clinic in May in order to focus on nailing my jibes.
Thanks for your help!
Dan

Answer
Hey Dan,

The main thing you need to consider is what your predominant sailing style is. For lake and open water sailing, I recommend a seat harness. If you only hit the waves once a year and are not looking to get into freestyle manuvers, then the cost of a waist harness may not be justified. A convertable style may be a good choice but be sure that the 'seat' postion is comfortable as that will probably be your most used position.

You can address this issue with Tinho when you go to your clinic. He is an excellent instructor and I'm sure you will go home overloaded with new sailing knowledge. I went through his instructor course years ago and was very impressed with his professionalism. I'm sure he can help you with your harness choice along with maybe some demos. Actually using various harnesses will really give you the best idea of what will work best for you.

Hope you have a great time at your clinic.
