Beginner at windsurfing...

2016/7/22 14:42:25

Question
Hi Patrick,
I am about to pick up a windsurf that is being given to me by my uncle up in Canada. I am very excited... I have done a little windsurfing before, but am a complete beginner in the field.

I have a few questions... About safety, and gear. I will be windsurfing on the East coast, as I will be living in Pocomoke, MD for the summer. Do you know anything about that area? Is the beach there safe to go windsurfing on?

I have a little problem as I will be windsurfing by myself. I have a friend that might be able to come to the beach with me, but I will be out there by myself on the water. Should I consider buying some sort of water-proof radio to keep in contact with my friend on the shore?

As far as safety equipement..what should I purchase? My father (I am only 20) seems to think I should wear a full-body and head protection (kind of in the style of the 'bubble boy'). I can see why he would be worried...but is a helmet recommendable? necessary?

And should I wear a wetsuit? As you can see, I am pretty clueless about a lot of things... I am probably not even thinking about a lot of the things I might need...so anything you can think of I'd probably need to know.

Thank you for your insight,

Christina Viau Haden

Answer
Dear Christina,
It's great to hear someone as excited as you are to start windsurfing. I do not know anything about Pocomoke MD but I would strongly suggest you find a windsurfing school nearby and take a lesson. Most of your questions as well as all the questions you will have once you actually get your equiptment are better answered by someone local who has knowledge of the area you plan to sail at and a windsurfing teacher is the best source for this. Most schools will also probably be able to tell you the most suitable place to start sailing. Wet suits are a good idea this time of year. Whether you need a full suit or a shorty depends on how warm the air and water is at your sailing spot. Again this info can be had from a local windsurfing school. You can try to find windsurfing lessons online at windsurfingmag.com. They have a school locator and have great tips for all levels of windsurfers. You can also try americanwindsurfer.com for more info.
Good Luck and Good Sailing.
Patrick
