I am a 45 year old male.I have decided to get into fitness walking.I used to walk a lot in my younger days-I also weighed a lot less then too!
Anyway,I would appreciate the advice you can give on shoes(runners or 'walkers'?),gadgets?,how I can get a good aerobic workout,etc.Thanks!

Good going! You have picked the best and most successful way to get and STAY fit!

Shoes: Walking shoes-positively! Try New Balance first because they are not only great, but they come in the largest array of width sizes and a good fit is where you should start.

Gadgets: The best one is a step counter. Second best is a CD player or an AM/FM cassette player( If you are not walking in traffic). Third best is a heart rate monitor. Fun, fun, FUN!

To get a good aerobic workout is so simple: make sure it is ok with your Doc and then just walk fast enough to pass the Walk and Talk test: you walk fast enough so that you are breathing a bit hard but you can easily talk.
To go faster you need to move your feet faster and take shorter steps.
