swelling fingers

2016/7/21 18:02:58

Question
Hi,
I generally walk on my treadmill every day, 2 to four miles. During these walks, my fingers, nothing else, will swell, tighten, and stiffen. I bend my elbows and swing my arms gently when I walk, like I'm supposed to, so I don't know what could be causing this problem, or whether or not I should be concerned. I've never heard of something like this happening. I hope you can help:) And thanks very much!
Kathy

Answer
Hi Kathy

You are experiencing peripheral edema. The good news: you are experiencing something very logical and common. The fluid in your arms and hands is  draining to your fingers. The stiffness comes from the swelling.

If you keep your hands from dropping below your waist level as you pump them then that might help. Go ahead and pump your arms by the way so that you feel a tug in your muscles.

Keep up the good walk and the good work!
