Buying Kid’s Skates

2016/7/23 15:21:41

Roller skates are still as popular as ever with children, with many parents currently looking for that important first pair of kid’s skates for their child. For those not sure what to buy however, the following brief guide may provide an initial insight.

The first point to consider is whether a child is ready for roller skates. Since roller skating relies on the ability to develop a firm balance and full control over one’s bodily coordination, any child who has not yet mastered everyday activities including walking whilst simultaneously coping with basic hand-to-eye coordination, or who appears unaware of what is going on in his or her surroundings, is unlikely to grasp what is needed to learn roller skating.

Usually, however, after the age of about four or five, children will be capable of taking their first tentative steps in a pair of roller skates. Although inline kids skates are available, it is usually advisable to build a child’s confidence through the use of quad roller skates (skates with two rows of wheels), as these make it easier for children to find their balance. The size of skate chosen should be identical to a child’s shoe size. However, since children’s feet are susceptible to sudden and unpredictable growth it is advisable to always choose roller skates that can be adjusted to fit larger feet.

It goes without saying of course that full protective gear should always be worn when skating, including a correctly sized helmet, pads for the knees and elbows, and wrist guards. It is also strongly advisable to try and book lessons for a child. These can usually be booked at the local roller skating rink.
