Camping, like the people who enjoy it, comes in all varieties. Different forms of camping require different kinds of gear and different planning strategies. Campgrounds, too, vary in the amenities or accommodations they offer so it’s always a good idea to make sure the destination suits the plan.

Backpack camping requires equipment that is much lighter in weight than its equivalent designed for more machine-driven camping. Backpacking is the least expensive form of camping but it’s the most rugged, too, requiring stamina and a willingness to indulge in very primitive conditions for days at a time.

Bicycle and motorcycle camping is most efficient when campers use equipment similar to that of backpackers. Whether traveling by bike or motorcycle, packing space is limited and every inch and ounce must be utilized wisely.

Animal camping relies on pack animals, usually horses or mules, to take campers to designated campgrounds where tents can be pitched and meals prepared but others involve more permanent structures where campers can stay. The luxury hotels equivalent to animal camping often includes the services of a chef, tour guide, and recreation director.

Canoe camping may have designated campgrounds at the beginning and end of a journey and maybe even campgrounds for bivouacking overnight along the way. This form of camping can be as primitive as backpacking but usually it’s not as strenuous.

For longer distance camping on the water, sail camping is the way to go. Go island hopping under the guidance of experienced sailors and bunk on the ship or at campgrounds on the islands visited during the tour.

RV parks and campgrounds that allow overnight parking of cars and camper trailers provide the full camping experience but allows the camper to bring along a home away from home that provides shelter from the elements. Trailer and RV camping enthusiasts usually enjoy this form of camping because the camping vehicles usually come with beds, electricity, TV, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Doesn’t matter which style of camping you prefer, it’s all a great way to explore the great outdoors in ways a short visit to the country just won’t do. Once the camping bug bites, many campers acquire the interest and equipment to enjoy various forms of camping, so they’re ready to go not matter what the style.
