Camping Could Save Rural British Pubs

UK pubs still play an important role in providing a community service and somewhere for individuals who live in remote areas to socialise. Traditionally pubs in rural areas often reside on large pieces of land. However this land is usually barely utilised to its fullest potential. Due to this fact rural pubs are now being encouraged to convert their unused land into campsites or ‘glampsites'. This would then help unlock a huge potential for new additional stream of revenue.

 Figures release in December 2014 by pitchup.com, a search website provider for all types of camping and caravanning in the UK and Ireland, showed that the domestic camping and caravan market is worth £2.4bn per annum. The report encourages pubs to take advantage of this market by getting on board so they can enjoy a slice of this potential income.

Pubs urged to unlock revenue potential of camping

Dan Yates, founder of Pitchup.com believes that converting wasted pub land into a campsite could be the saviour of businesses in future and prevent pubs being turned into mini markets.

Yates believes that nowadays many camping and leisure companies build and deliver glamping options such as camping pods and this is a lead the rural pubs should be following. He believes that with a small amount of thought and effort it is not hard for a pub to put their unused land to good use and turn it into a profitable and popular campsite.

Yates said "We're keen to help keep our pubs alive by building on and supporting the business rather than changing it entirely."

pitchup.com reported that they only have 29 bookable pub camping sites on their books. Over the last 12 months they have taken over 4,000 bookings for campsites located at pubs bringing in an value of £303,000. This then equates to £10,448 per pub per year in additional income.
