Tent Camping for Rookies

The first thing you should know about shopping for a camping tent, if you do not already have one, is that a tent that is advertised to sleep eight actually will sleep six comfortably. Every year over 42 million people in the United States go tent camping; in comparison only 35 million people play golf.

Tent Features

The number and configuration of windows, pockets, and doors can make a big difference in your comfort level while staying in a camping tent. Most camping tents use a combination of window placement, vents, and roofs of breathable fabric to allow air to circulate. If good circulation is very important to you, then look for a camping tent that has windows facing each other so you get the maximum amount of cross ventilation.

Set-Up

The time and effort that it takes to set up a camping tent is oftentimes overlooked by the rookie whose sites are set on the great outdoors. Most small camping tents can be set up in about 10 minutes, large tents 15-20 minutes. The set up or take down time of a camping tent can be increased dramatically if there is a strong wind present.

Having tent poles that are thick, long, and heavy will also help in a strong wind. You will find this task a lot easier if your tent has set up instructions sewn into it and pole sections are colored-coded and linked by cord or chain. It is also a great idea to practice setting up and taking down your camping tent a few times before you take it into the wilderness, something the rookie does not have time for.

Weakness Caution

Here is the catch 22 in camping tents. Most tent fabrics are made out of either nylon or polyester. Both of these fabrics, if left out in the direct sunlight for a month or longer, can be severely weakened by ultraviolet light. Once weakened, the tent fabric is more likely to rip in a high wind.

Buy Used

Here is some great advice on how to make a great buy on a slightly used camping tent. First thing the rookie should do is shop for brand new until he decides which one he wants. Then search the classifieds and craigslist. Once you find one and want to make a deal then you should take the time to set it up right then and there. This will allow you to discover any flaws and maybe get a few tips from the previous owner.
