Troubleshooting Bike Clicking Noise: Rear Wheel & Pedaling Backwards

1. Check your chain tension. If the chain is too loose, it can cause the chain to skip and make a clicking noise. To check the chain tension, you can use a chain checker tool or simply try to move the chain up and down by hand. If the chain moves more than 1/2 inch, it is too loose. Tighten the chain by turning the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur.

2. Check your freewheel or cassette. The freewheel or cassette is the set of gears on the rear wheel of your bike. If the freewheel or cassette is damaged or worn out, it can cause the chain to skip and make a clicking noise. Inspect the freewheel or cassette for any damage or wear. If you see any damage, you will need to replace the freewheel or cassette.

3. Clean and lubricate your chain. A dirty or dry chain can cause the chain to skip and make a clicking noise. Clean the chain with a degreaser and then lubricate it with a bike chain lubricant.

4. Adjust your rear derailleur. If the rear derailleur is out of adjustment, it can cause the chain to skip and make a clicking noise. Check the alignment of the rear derailleur and adjust it as necessary.

5. Replace the rear wheel. If you have tried all of the above and the clicking noise is still present, it may be time to replace the rear wheel.
