Dos and Donts while Bicycling!

2016/7/25 11:38:57

You don't have to have a fancy bike, sport clothing or other equipment in order to enjoy bicycling. Getting on whatever bike you have, making sure to wear the proper safety gear, and just going for it is much better than never getting on your bike at all!

Your love of cycling will grow after you get into it and find out how much you like it. Then you will know what kind of extras you should save your money for and add into your cycling life. The first special things riders usually add to their stash is some night-riding safety gear. Some flashers, lights, or a headlamp is a good thing to have, and reflective clothing makes you much easier to see by passing motorists.

A good water bottle or a camel pack is another piece of fancy equipment that new bikers rate among their top first purchases. Having easy access to hydration means it's more likely you will stay hydrated. The way a camel pack works is interesting. It's like a flat water balloon on your back, attached to a long tube straw. You wear it like a backpack, with the straw in front, right next to your cheek so you can turn your head at any time to take a sip. Genius, eh?

Good shoes and wrist supports are next on the list. As you go on longer, more intense rides, you will find that your body doesn't like repetitive strenuous activity in certain joints. Ankles, foot bones, wrists and hand bones are the ones that complain first, so giving them some support is a good idea.

Sweat-wicking clothing is another good thing to put on your wish list. At first, a breathable cotton tee shirt and some sport shorts will be fine, but if you go on marathon rides, you will want something that sucks the moisture away from your body, which will prevent chafing of your skin.

See? All of these things are simple and easy to find, especially online, and you don't have to have it all at first. Start out slow, riding around your neighborhood, and getting to know your balance and what you would like to have in a bike. Then move on from there! Step by step, you can build up to where the pros are.

And by the way... fall is a FAVORITE time for bike riding around the globe. Get on out there!
