Spring is here and it's time to pull your bike out of the garage and get riding! Biking is one of the few recreational activities that the entire family can participate in, young or old. Some of the metal bike baskets are strong enough to hold medium sized dogs on the lower end of the weight spectrum. Additionally, baskets that go on the rear of your bicycle, attaching to a bike rack, offer stability and higher weight limits. Check with the manufacturer to get the specs on these baskets if you are planning on using them for medium sized dog. The only real option for taking the larger dogs with you on rides, besides making them run, is to get a pull behind trailer. Trailers will be addressed in a later article.

Before taking your dog out for it's first ride in a basket, it's best to err on the side of caution. Even though you know your pet, take it slow and give him or her a chance to adjust to the new sensations of being up in the basket and moving around. Doggy treats are always helpful! Even a reluctant dog can be converted to the joys of cycling with love, patience, and TREATS!

Keep in mind that safety should always be the #1 priority! Check to make sure the basket is attached properly and securely. Attaching your dog to a leash and onto your handlebars is a good idea until you know how your pet will react to different situations. Most important - don't rush your dog into anything they aren't ready to do.
