To put a stem on a BMX bike, you will need:

  • A new stem
  • An adjustable wrench
  • A damp towel
  1. Putting a stem on a BMX bike is an elementary process. You first need to know how to remove the stem before you can put a new one on. There are several reasons for putting a new stem on a BMX bike. Most commonly it is done to replace the existing one to meet the desires of the rider.   2. Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the handlebar nut. Carefully remove the handlebars. Use the damp towel to wipe down the handlebar stem. Set the handlebars aside and remove the stem by pulling straight up. Set the stem aside.
  3. With the damp cloth, clean any excess grime from the stem hole. Place the new stem into the stem hole and replace the nut. Return the handlebars to the stem and hand tighten the nut. Once you establish the proper height and position, use the wrench to tighten the nut completely.
