Getting Started In Bmx Racing

A fun sport for young people is BMX racing. The basic bike for kids should have 20 inch wheels. Using whatever bikes they have even if it's not a true BMX freestyle bike is what riders under age 6 can do. Bikes with wheels as small as 12 inches is what these may be riding. There are also tracks for racing big wheel bikes.

If you're going to use a mountain bike or cruiser with 24-16 inch wheels, check ahead of time with your local track for advice. Racing a mountain bike in the Cruiser class is what many tracks will allow you to do.

You should equip the bike you use this way. You should remove all the reflectors. To prevent injury in a wreck, take off the kickstand and chainguard.

Pads are important on the bike's top tube, crossbar, and stem. Many BMX freestyle bikes have these pads already. It will cost you about $5 to add this safety feature if your bike doesn't have them yet.

It's important for your bike to have at least one brake that works. It's okay if a coaster brake is all the bike has. You need to be certain that your bike is in a safe working order.

A paper plate should be tied to the handlebars. This is your number plate. They'll give you a number to put on it when you get to the track. This number will serve as your identification to the fans and judges.

Safety is important

A helmet is essential for head protection. Depending on the track rules, this may need to be a full-face helmet or a helmet with a separate mouthguard. Other tracks will accept any type of inexpensive motocross-style helmet.

Wear protective clothing. To protect the legs or the rider, wear jeans or regular long pants. You can wear a long-sleeved shirt for arm protection. Good sturdy shoes that they're comfortable riding in is a must since riders will use their feet.

Wearing gloves is a great idea even if you can race without them. Be sure they fit well and don't interfere with moving your hands. In case repairs are needed, bring bike tools and an air pump.
