In the early 1990s, GT Bicycles was one of the most popular bike brands in the world. However, the company's market share declined in the late 1990s and early 2000s due to increasing competition from other bike brands.

In 2001, GT Bicycles was acquired by Pacific Cycle, a Taiwanese company that also owns the Schwinn and Mongoose bike brands. Pacific Cycle continued to manufacture GT Bikes in the United States but gradually shifted production to Taiwan and China to reduce costs.

Today, GT Bicycles is a global brand with bikes sold in over 80 countries. The company's headquarters are still located in Santa Ana, California but most of its bikes are made in Taiwan and China.
