The Cost Of Polarized Glasses

Most anglers know something about the fact that polarized glasses help with fishing. And they know that they help by reducing glare and enabling them to see into the water. But that's about all they know, and in all honesty, as far as "how polarized glasses work", that's all they need to know. There are some things that every angler should be aware of as far as the cost of polarized glasses is concerned though.

For many years, I refused to pay more than $25 on a pair of polarized glasses, and never understood the value of them. I would wear the ones I had, but never liked them. My vision was distorted; they got scratched easily, and just sucked. At the beginning of every fishing season, I would purchase a new pair of cheap, no-name, polarized glasses, and every single time would end up disappointed. Then a friend of mine let me borrow his polarized glasses, and I wore them fishing on our favorite river.

They were incredible! I couldn't believe how comfortable they were and the level of clarity they provided. Between the glasses he let me use and the cheap ones I always bought, the difference was like night and day. Then I asked him how much they cost. He said $150! I about had a heart attack! When we were done fishing, I returned them to him and went on my way, still amazed at how much they cost.

The next week I went fishing alone, and used my normal polarized glasses. They were so terrible, I couldn't stand it! When I got home from fishing that day, I went online, and purchased a quality pair of polarized glasses for $100. I still couldn't see spending $150. I received those polarized glasses and have been wearing them ever since. That was 6 years ago! I found that because I had "invested" that amount of money, I took great care of them, who would have thought?

Something occurred to me the other day. If I amortize the cost of my quality glasses, they only cost me about $17 a year. That's less than I used to spend on the cheap polarized glasses that were crap. My quality polarized glasses actually cost me less than those pieces of crap that I used to wear. Who would have thought? My point to this entire article is to let you know that when it comes to polarized glasses for fishing (or anything else) your mother was right…You get what you pay for.
