Pop Ups in Winter

2016/7/16 15:24:01

Fishing in Devon Pop-ups are a very useful bait to have in your armoury against the elusive and wiry fish and can be used on allsorts of rigs, chod rigs, helicopter rigs etc.

Also on the market are high visual pop-ups, very good for the Carp to see in the murky waters.

At Devon fishing holidays we prefer to use the pop-up more so between the months of November and March, the days are darker so the “high vis” baits help to attracted more fish towards your swim and ultimately on to your hook.

Also in the winter the fish sometimes need stimulating to come on the feed, so with a bright bait, strong smelling the fish are more likely to come on the feed.

Another bonus with using the pop-up during the winter is that all the leaves from trees collects at the bottom of the lakes and normal bottom baits can become clog or worse hidden from the fish. Were as the pop-up will raise slightly above the bottom and will all ways be on show.

Try to use one bottom bait and one pop-up bait and see what works best for you, also don’t discount other baits like Maggots and boillies straight out of the bag. You have an advantage at our holiday cottages and fishing centre to have the time and opportunity to experiment,

You can make your own pop ups from your very own boillie mix. When you have completed your mix, set some aside and add in a manufacturers, cork dust, pellet or ball. You will need a bit of trial an error experimentation on the quantities in the mix to achieve the buoyancy you require. Or try one of our self catering cottages and fishing centre mixes.

I heard a lovely statement when asking how to make pop ups “I open up a tub of ........ pops or I open a tub of........pops, is there another way?”

Remember experiment to find out what will work in the conditions your fishing under (P.S. what are they using over there?)

Come fishing in Devon on a Devon fishing holiday, stay at our holiday cottages and fishing for fun, Devon self catering cottages and fishing extraordinaire.
