How to Catch Trout in the Summer

Summer Trout Fishing Tips

Trout fishing is a great way to spend a summer day, but fishing during this time of the year can be somewhat difficult. Below are some tips to keep in mind when fishing for trout during the summer months.

Find Cooler Water
Trout become less active and move to cooler water when the temperatures begin to rise, so look for places that offer a break in the temperature. These places include the following:
Pools-During the summer months, trout will move into deep pools where the water is cooler. You may have to use some weight and set up some type of bottom rig to get to the trout, but it is well worth it.
Riffles-Riffles offer plenty of oxygenation, so they can become trout magnets during the summer.
Tributaries-If you can find a place where a small stream or waterfall enters the stream, river, or pond on which you are fishing, you will likely find trout.
Overhanging Trees or Vegetation-Trees provide cover for trout, which in turns provides shade, which in turn makes the water cooler. Trees also drop insects into the water, so trout will often gather beneath them.

Fish Early and Late
During the summer months you want to fish during the coolest part of the day. This means early and late. Trout will feed and become more active during these times.

Try Using Natural Baits
Using lures likes spinners and spoons will catch trout, but using natural baits, properly presented, can be much more productive. Why? Trout are less active in the warmer water, so the key is to get your bait as close as possible to the trout. This can be somewhat difficult to do if you are using a spinner, but if you are fishing a deep pool, try using a bottom rig with night crawlers or some other type of “still” bait.

Try Fly Fishing or Using Insects
There are a variety of insect hatches during the summer, so fly fishing or using insects like crickets or grasshoppers can be very rewarding during this time of the year.

These are just a few tips that I’ve found to be helpful when fishing for trout in the summer. The important thing is to think like a trout and seek out places where the water is cooler and the current delivers food.
