YETI Coolers Guide to Deer Calling

2016/7/16 16:30:08

YETI Coolers is nestled in the flowing Hill Country of Central Texas, just on the outskirts of South Texas, and is primed for the Late White-tailed Deer Season running from January 18-31, 2010. Seasoned hunters understand the necessity of a durable, high-quality cooler for hunting trips to store their kill and their own nourishment. YETI Coolers has proud to provide the world's best coolers for every outdoor activity and adventure. White-tailed Deer Season is one of our favorite pastimes, and so we would like to share with you a nugget of wisdom that has always made this time of year bountiful. Read on for YETI Coolers' guide to deer calling.

Determining what kind of deer call to use is not a matter of which rut phase you are hunting, but which sex and age class of deer you want to attract to your rut. Does respond well to distress calls and Maternal/Neonatal calls, primarily out of maternal instinct. As you may know, all bucks respond to any call in hopes to finding an estrus doe. Social Grunt and Low Grunt are particularly effective. Dominant bucks also respond well to Mating calls and aggressive grunts, out of the desire to exert their dominance over a subdominant buck. Subdominant bucks respond to Mating calls during a breeding phase, but may not respond because they are afraid of encountering a dominant buck.

There are four basic techniques for calling White-tailed deer that can be used anytime during the rut. Each technique focuses on a certain sex and age class, with different calls that have proven to be effective:

Technique #1: For Does and Young Bucks

The first technique targets does and young bucks. You want to primarily use the Distress Call or Fawn Bawl. A does' maternal instinct will lead them right to you, while young bucks hear a young fawn they would like to get to know better.

Technique #2: For Any Deer

The second technique is effective with any sex or age class of White-tailed deer. Use a Social or Low Grunt call and any type of deer should respond.

Technique #3: For All Bucks

Let's be honest, at the end of the day, who doesn't want to put a buck on ice (preferably into their YETI Cooler)? The third technique uses a combination of the Social, Low Grunt, and Tending Grunt.

Technique #4: For Dominant Bucks

The fourth technique is not as effective during the Rest Phase and Post Rut because bucks are exhausted, not as aggressive, and not as interested in breeding. Dominant bucks, as we mentioned earlier, respond to mating calls and aggressive grunts out of the desire to exert dominance and breed. If you are hunting for any legal buck, however, it may be best not to use mating calls or aggressive grunts. Use a combination of Social, Low Grunt, Tending Grunt, or Grunt Snort.

Deer calling, much like all aspects of hunting, takes practice to perfect. Once you have it down, the adventure will only get more incredible. When you are out in the blind, don't forget to properly pack yourself the amenities of a good trip.
