Taking Care Of Your Knife

2016/7/16 16:33:18

Bowie knives are almost too cheap these days. People forget what they're buying and, rather than taking pride in what they have, oftentimes fail to take care of them and just buy new ones. This defeats the whole purpose of owning a fine bladed tool or weapon. The best versions of these knives are among the most beautiful blades in production. The design of the knife is connected to the American Frontier and to some of its most notable figures.

Clean Rust Immediately: Rust might not form immediately on Bowie knives, particularly if you have a knife made from high quality steel. However, if you let the blade come into prolonged contact with water, rust will certainly form. Obviously, the key is to keep your blade dry at all times. However, knowing how to remove rust spots if and when they form is also important. You will find numerous chemicals on the market that can take rust off, but you can also use natural options, such as white vinegar, onions and even potatoes for the purpose.

Sharpen It Properly: If there is one single skill that is hard for new Bowie knife owners to master, it is the art of sharpening their blade. However, the fact remains that a sharp knife is a good knife and a dull knife is dangerous. You will need to find the right sharpening system for your needs - a whetstone or a rod system work well. You may also want to use a strop during the finishing stages of your sharpening, and in between sharpening sessions. A strop can help ensure that your knife remains sharp and polished, with a just a few minutes of work.

Proper Storage: Another vital element of maintaining your Bowie knife is proper storage. If you will be using your knife every day, and caring for it properly, then you can store it in its leather sheath without any ill effects. However, if you will be using your knife only periodically, then storing it in an airtight container is the best option. Leather absorbs moisture and this can lead to rust starting on the blade, so take care when storing your knife.

These are just a few of the steps involved with properly caring for your Bowie knife. Following these tips will help ensure that your knife lasts as long as possible and looks great throughout its lifetime. However, failing to maintain your knife will result in a poor experience.
